A friend of mine is in charge of an annual festival down by the harbour in Charleston, South Carolina where we live. The event kicks off the summer and raises money for a non-profit organization in the community. Every year she arranges for food vendors, music performances, and miscellaneous activities for young adults and families. Charleston is known for having a great deal of outdoor festivals and celebrations almost every week, but in years past, her event was the only one to occur each first Sunday in May.

Well April showers bring May flowers, and rain it did in April. All of April. While some celebrations went on, rain or shine, several were canceled, and as luck would have it, a very popular annual event was rescheduled for, lo and behold, the first Sunday in May.

Of course my friend started to worry about the success of her event. Every other year she raised a substantial amount of money and was consistently able to provide for the non-profit. She really didn’t want to fall short this year.

Time to promote her event! But did she have much money set aside for promotions?

Since the purpose of her event was to raise as much money as possible for the non-profit organization, my friend surely didn’t have a large budget for advertising. Radio and TV time runs for a pretty penny, and in this day and age, commercials can become ineffective in the world of technology where viewers can choose to skip over promotional ads.

A well placed billboard seemed like a wise type of advertising, as people in the very neighborhood as her event would naturally see the promotion every single day. But again, her budget simply wouldn’t allow for it.

There are several ways to finish your vinyl banner, pertaining to the way they are hemmed or mounted. Most sign companies offer taped hem or heat sealed edges. You can also opt to have hems sewn on or choose to have no finishing at all. No finishing is okay for one time or occasional use. Taped hem or heat sealed edges offer a finished look with durability for long term use. Sewn hems are highly recommended for street banners and other larger outdoor banner signs that will be under more wear and tear.

Other finishing for vinyl banners can be determined by how exactly the banner will be used or installed. The most popular are grommets, also known as eyelets – they are typically applied every 2 feet so that you can install your vinyl banner with rope, zip ties, suction cups, etc. depending on where it is being installed. Banners can also be mounted with pole pockets, sewn in rope, D-rings, wind slits and webbing.
