Link Building Practices that Will Harm Your Online Business
It’s well known that building links is a very important way to rank highly in the search engines. Yet you should not simply go out there and heedlessly build as many links as you can, for if you don’t do it the right way it can actually hurt your website. Some newcomers to internet marketing put in a great deal of work link building, only to find out later that they were not going about it in the right way. You can build links to improve your website’s rank, but if you want good long term results you have to do it honestly and using the right strategy. If you are new to internet marketing or SEO, you should know about some of the ways you can go wrong with link building. Let’s look at some of these frequently made link building mistakes. If you would like to learn how to build links to your site for free which will boost your site rankings quickly take a look at what Oli Tee has to say in my Zero Down Traffic Blueprint for more details.
It’s a mistake to get backlinks from web pages that the search engine spiders can’t crawl.
Placing a link on one of these will not help you no matter what you do. Let me explain. There are sites that are not indexed by Google because of the robot.txt file, so, your links will not be counted when placed on one of these sites. So, if you want your backlinks counted then it is important that they be placed on search engine friendly pages.
Generating backlinks from irrelevant sites is a silly mistake yet again, and yes, it’s really popular too. If you think about it, it makes a lot of sense to have sites that are similar to yours pointing links towards it. If you have a site on gardening and you get backlinks from a dating site, it would be literally worthless. Don’t be fooled into thinking that it takes a lot of extra effort to find these relevant sites because it doesn’t and the reward is well worth the extra work anyway. The internet is huge so there is a site that is relevant to yours, no matter how small the niche is.
Remember that the PageRank (PR) is of a page, not of the site. So if the homepage of a site has a PR 5 and a new page gets added to the site, it will have a Pagerank of 0. PageRank is one of the cornerstones in SEO and backlinking strategy; so, using it to your advantage will only help prove to be a good business move.
Your backlinking strategy can mean the difference between success and failure when playing the SEO game. For your own good, don’t be like the thousands of webmasters who make these same link building mistakes day-in and day out.
